To optimize your ecommerce store for online shopping, you need to know how users view your store. This means you’ll need to understand the most popular browsers used by consumers.

As of June 2021, Google’s Chrome is the leading internet browser in the world with a global market share of 65.27 percent. In other words, more than six in ten people use Chrome to browse the internet.

Apple’s Safari is in second place with 18.32 percent, 46.95 percentage points behind. Mozilla’s Firefox and Samsung Internet are the next two most used web browsers, with market shares of around 3.30 percent.

Even though they rank third and fourth, their popularity pales in comparison with Chrome’s. Together with Safari, the combined market shares of these three web browsers make up less than half of Chrome’s.

Internet Browser Market Share by Platform

Zooming into the internet browser market shares on different platforms, Chrome continues to dominate as the most popular browser on desktops with a market share of 68.72 percent. This is similar to mobile phones, of which its market share is 63.76 percent.

But Chrome’s market share for tablets tells a different story. While it is still the most popular browser, its lead significantly narrows. At 44.33 percent, it’s just slightly more popular than Safari, which has a 42.06 percent market share.

This still marks a significant milestone for Chrome as March 2021 marked the first time that it overtook Safari to hold the largest internet browser market share among tablet users. In the one-year period from June 2020 to June 2021, the internet browser market share of Safari for tablets fell by 5.88 percentage points. Meanwhile, Chrome’s market share grew 6.70 percentage points.

The market shares of the most popular browsers also vary according to region. For instance, Chrome and Safari continue to be the two most used web browsers in the US, but the gap separating them is significantly smaller than on a global scale.

Chrome’s internet browser market share in the US is 48.54 percent with Safari relatively close behind at 36.37 percent.
